HOW IS DIABETES MELLITUS DIAGNOSED?
Friday, March 27, 2009 5:41The symptoms of diabetes mellitus include frequent urination and recurrent urinary tract infections. A vaginal yeast infection with severe itching is often a sign of diabetes in older women. You may become excessively thirsty and feel generally ill, with some weight loss and a decreased appetite. If you are overweight, you may not experience weight or appetite loss; in fact, your weight and appetite may increase. Some people notice vision problems or dizziness.
Your blood glucose may be high and consequently “spill” into your urine, which increases your chance of a urinary tract infection. The high blood and urine glucose levels are usually sufficient for diagnosis. Sometimes, to confirm the diagnosis, a glucose tolerance test may be needed, which shows whether your body is controlling its blood glucose normally. Latent diabetes mellitus may also be uncovered by this test.
